Before you borrow money

A 90-second read for the moment the money is offered. Borrowing is not the mistake. Borrowing without knowing the true cost, the timing, and the trap — that is the mistake.

Situation
You have a gap — a bill due before income lands — and a loan, app, or person is offering to cover it. The pressure is real and the decision feels urgent.
The risk
A timing gap solved with the wrong loan becomes a standing exposure. Short, high-cost credit can cost far more than the gap it covered, and roll over into the next month.

§ What to do first

  • Name the real gap: the exact amount, and the exact date income arrives to close it.
  • Ask for the total repayment, not the rate — what leaves your hand in the end, in naira.
  • Check the timing: does repayment fall due before or after your income lands?
  • Ask what happens if you are one day late — the penalty, the access, the contacts.
  • Confirm whether a cheaper, slower source covers the same gap in time.
  • § What not to do

    Do not

Do not grant an app access to your contacts or gallery to unlock a loan. Do not borrow to cover a loan. Do not sign or agree to a figure you have not seen written in full. Do not treat a one-off gap as a reason for a recurring debt.

    § Evidence to keep

  • The full written terms — total repayable, due date, penalties — saved before you accept.
  • Every repayment receipt and confirmation, dated.
  • Screenshots of any permissions requested, and any threats or harassment received.
  • A simple running note: borrowed, repaid, balance, next due date.
  • Escalation point
If a lender harasses you, contacts people in your phone, or publishes your details: keep the evidence, stop further access, and report the conduct to the relevant consumer-protection and data-protection authorities. Verify the current reporting channel before relying on it.
